Introduction

  • Dropbox is an online storage utility that allows you to share files with people you know.
  • We use it to share notes, slides, virtually anything that helps with studying with the whole medclass.
  • The biggest advantageof dropbox is that it's seamlessly integrated to your desktop, so you can manage it like an ordinary folder!
    • As opposed to online filesharing sites such as mediafire, which makes you jump through hoops and spend lots of time just to download a single file.

How to

  • Get a dropbox account. Sign up at https://www.dropbox.com/. It's entirely free, and you get 2GB of space as a starter package.
  • Install the desktop client
  • Create a shared folder, and invite your friends!
  • The class rep shall create the folder and invite the class.
  • Message the class rep and ask him/her to invite you!

What NOT to do

  • DO NOT delete a shared folder on Dropbox, even if it's on your own desktop. Doing so will delete it for everyone.
    • If you have to delete to save space, remove yourself from the folder first.
    • Leave a shared folder

Tips on more storage space

(contributed by Ong Wenchong, Class of 2014)

For those who mentioned that they don't have enough space, here's some tips to help increase your space from 2gb up! (I've got 12.4gb now - it will never finish with normal usage.)

1. https://www.dropbox.com/referrals
Referrals - this is the basis of dropbox storage space. If you can get a friend with a New Email to create an account and install dropbox on a New Comp, you get 250MB more!
The trick is: (1) Farm friends who never use dropbox before, whoever you can find. (2) Farm your family's computers which doesn't already have dropbox (a.k.a. send referral to an alternate email address and download dropbox in that new comp. Do this for every new comp and you should be on your way to big space!)

2. https://www.dropbox.com/edu
Link your nus email to dropbox and poof! All your referrals become 500MB each, doubling all your efforts! (up to a max of 20GB!)

3. https://www.dropbox.com/gs
Complete this getting started list and it's a free 1.75GB more space!

4.https://www.dropbox.com/free
Complete this bunch of twitter and facebook stuff and its another 750MB of space.

5. https://www.dropbox.com/plans
If money doesn't matter to you, just do it and save the effort.

6. https://www.dropbox.com/help/287
Camera upload that gives you 3GB extra space!

Bottomline is: No one should be saying "I've run out of dropbox space!" :P
